The Galop Canal Revitalization Project

The GCRP is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the restoration and revitalization of the Galop Canal and area. Our organization would like to maximize the economic potential of the Galop Canal locks and the surrounding areas. This effort includes endeavors such as:

· A boardwalk which commemorates the old Village of Iroquois, as it existed prior to the Seaway, which would run from the beach to the boathouses. A boardwalk would enhance the river front, and provide a walking venue for village residents and visitors alike. It would also provide residents with the health benefits of a more active lifestyle.

· The Marina Office building is in need of upgrades, including expanded washroom and shower facilities, exterior renovation in a historic motif, and interior renovation. If boaters are to return to the marina, and spread by word of mouth the uniqueness of the experience, it is essential that the office building be upgraded.

· Historically, the passage from the village of Iroquois to Iroquois Point was by means of a swing bridge. A swing bridge will be very unique and essential for pedestrians to cross from the Marina building site to the south side. With high enough clearance for most pleasure craft, the swing bridge will attract both boating and land tourism, bringing economic spin offs to the community.

· The expansion of docking facilities will allow more boaters to tie up at the Marina, and generate more economic benefits for the area. The boats themselves create an attraction and draw more people and dollars to the area.
